Lake Erie Land Use Plan for Tourism Proposed

Update 11/25/2014:

HB 524 entered committee hearings in the House Finance and Appropriations Committee on Dec. 2 at 1:30 p.m. No progress made.

 About the Issue:

HB 524 calls for the establishment of a Lakefront Ohio Economic Development and Tourism Plan for the counties bordering Lake Erie. Sponsored by Reps. Armond Budish, D-Beachwood, and Matt Lundy, D-Elyria, the plan should include recommendations for the use of vacant land, land currently available for commercials use, and land currently in use that has the potential to attract commerce and tourism to the region.

It proposes development of the plan by eight institutions of higher education in the region, with oversight by the Development Services Agency. It also calls for $3 million to be appropriated for the project.

The Ohio Travel Association met with Rep. Lundy for clarification of the bill and to emphasize the need for local tourism businesses to be actively engaged in the process should the bill become law.
